Abstract : This is a valuable book written by three authors under the general editorship of Professor Georgievskii of the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow. It is concerned primarily with aspects relating to the mineral nutrition of farm animals and approaches this subject under two main headings. The first of these deals with the biological function and metabolism of both macro- and micro-elements within the body and comprises ten sections. Subjects dealt with include the relationship between the physicochemical properties of minerals and their biological activity, the mineral composition of common feedstuffs, biological tissues and livestock products. A section relating mineral and water metabolism thereafter links the biochemical properties of minerals to their physiological role in the body and the final sections under this heading deal with secretion and absorption into and from the gut, and the kinetics of mineral metabolism in blood, organs and tissues. Each section is dealt with comprehensively and useful is the inclusion of considerable Russian data previously available to most readers only in abstract form. The second part of the book deals with the practical problems involved in defining mineral requirements and begins with an assessment of existing methods and thereafter considers the specific requirements of cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. The approach throughout the book is essentially practical and its review of the literature is extensive and in whole it will serve as an important reference work for those interested in animal nutrition and biochemistry as well as those concerned with the more practical aspects of diet formulation. D. ScottADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:This book is the English translation, with amendments, of Mineral'noe pitanie zhivotnykh (Moscow, USSR; Kolos (1979)). It considers in detail the biological function and metabolism of minerals in the body, and mineral feeding of various species of farm animals in 16 chapters -- 8 by Georgievskii on mineral composition of feeds and animals, on the physiological role of minerals, and on feeding poultry; 7 by Annenkov on the metabolism of minerals and on feeding other classes of stock; and 1 by Samokhin on controlling the adequacy of minerals in the diet. The bibliographies contain an even mix of references in Russian and in other languages and this is a valuable compilation for researchers and others involved in animal nutrition and biochemistr MenosAbstract : This is a valuable book written by three authors under the general editorship of Professor Georgievskii of the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow.
